                                               Math Class Toolbox:

The following items are required daily for math class:

  • A COVERED textbook.  You can use a book sock, wrapping paper or a brown paper bag.  It doesn't matter.  Just cover your book!
  • A scientific calculator.  This doesn't have to be fancy, but you should look for these features:

It should say "scientific."  This means that the calculator will use order of operations to solve problems.  Can't tell?  Then try this problem: 3+5x2-6.  You should get "7" for your answer.

An "A b/c" key is a great feature.  It allows you to operate on fractions in fraction form

A "Fraction to Decimal" function.  You will sometimes see it look like "F - D".  This allows you to change from fraction to decimal form and back again.

Trigonometry functions - like Sin, Cos, Tan.  If your calculator has these functions, you won't need to buy another calculator throughout high school!

Probability functions are nice, too.  Look for "nPr" , "nCr" and "n!" keys to make probability problems easier for you.

You can find an HP, Casio or Texas Instrument with everything listed above for about $10.  You SHOULD  HAVE  YOUR  OWN  CALCULATOR  so you are used to where every function is when it comes time for NJ ASK.  The more comfortable you are, the less you have to worry.

  • Pencils, pencils, and more pencils.  NO PENS ARE ALLOWED.  NO, NOT EVEN ERASABLE PENS!  NEVER.  NEVER EVER!
  • A binder (maybe color coordinated to your class color?) with 3 sections, or a notebook and folder for your papers.

              Grading Policy

Grades are based on the accumulation of points from the following categories:

PRACTICE: These graded assignments are worth 15% of your grade.

  • HOMEWORK  you start out with 30/30 points that are yours to lose by not doing/completing your homework.
  • CLASSWORK is any graded assignment that primarily takes place in class and can include:
    • DO NOWS will sometimes be collected and graded.
    • LABS AND PROJECTS are applications of concepts involving writing and reading comprehension.  These labs and projects are usually worked on in class with partners but are submitted individually.

PERFORMANCE:  These are assessments which are normally done individually and are worth 85% of your grade.

  • QUIZZES which are frequently given, sometimes announced, sometimes not.
  • TESTS are given with advance notice and cover a multiple topics or a chapter.
